{"id":1977,"date":"2019-03-08T17:09:53","date_gmt":"2019-03-08T22:09:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.parecorp.com\/?p=1977"},"modified":"2022-04-02T14:34:54","modified_gmt":"2022-04-02T18:34:54","slug":"save-a-tree-or-a-forest-by-reducing-your-junk-mail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/2019\/03\/08\/save-a-tree-or-a-forest-by-reducing-your-junk-mail\/","title":{"rendered":"Save a Tree (or a Forest) By Reducing Your \u201cJunk\u201d Mail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Co-authored by Victoria Howland, P.E., LEED AP, Project Engineer and a member of Pare\u2019s Sustainability Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you feel weighted down by the amount\nof paper mail you receive every day?<\/li><li>Are you frustrated because you don\u2019t\nknow how you were added to a company\u2019s mailing list after you receive the\numpteenth catalog for products you will never use?&nbsp; <\/li><li>Do you feel guilty about immediately\nthrowing almost all of your mail in the recycling bin every day?&nbsp; <\/li><li>Did you know that 2.4% of America&#8217;s\nmunicipal waste stream comes from mail?<\/li><li>Are you unsure of how to make it stop???&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">is <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">estimate<\/g><\/g>d that only 42% of the 9.8 billion catalogs that were mailed in 2016 within the United States were actually read.&nbsp; Furthermore, only approximately 53% of mail actually gets recycled.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nSierra Club estimates that a hardwood tree can produce 10,000 to 20,000 sheets\nof paper.&nbsp; If the average catalog is 50\nsheets and the average tree produces 15,000 sheets of paper, it would take 33\nmillion trees to produce the catalogs that were mailed in 2016.&nbsp; Of the 33 million trees, 19 million would\nproduce catalogs that weren\u2019t even opened.&nbsp;\nImagine the impact if those trees were left standing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Sierra-Club-1024x517.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1983\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally\nall of that mail would be recycled to reduce the impact of that much paper\ncontributing to our landfills.&nbsp; But a\nbetter solution is to reduce it before it becomes junk mail.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ngood news is that there are a few resources to help with that process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Catalog-Choice-1024x331.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1982\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CatalogChoice\nwas founded on the principle of stopping junk mail for good, and over the past eight\nyears has helped over two million users reduce unwanted mail.&nbsp; It provides a centralized service that sends\nopt-out requests to merchants based on a household\u2019s mailing address.&nbsp; After creating an account, the user searches\nfor the company\/catalog\/magazine to cancel and confirms the basic information\nincluding the name and mailing address printed on the label to unsubscribe.&nbsp; Account holders can also block most free\ntrial subscriptions to magazines through this account, otherwise the website\nwill outline the publication\u2019s removal process. &nbsp;Because this is household-based, this provides\na simple way for multiple family members to reduce unwanted mailings.&nbsp; Visit www.catalogchoice.org to learn\nmore.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Optoutprescreen-1024x419.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1979\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nConsumer Credit Reporting Companies\u2014consisting of Equifax, Experian, Innovis,\nand TransUnion, under the auspices of the Federal Consumer Financial Protection\nBureau\u2014provide the national \u201cOpt Out\u201d program for offers of credit or\ninsurance.&nbsp; There are two separate\nprocesses that give consumers the choice to \u201copt out\u201d for five years or\npermanently.&nbsp; Consumers need to provide\nsome basic information\u2014 including name, telephone number, social security\nnumber, and date of birth\u2014all of which is how the credit organizations track\nconsumers.&nbsp; The five-year program can be\ncompleted by phone or online, but the permanent process needs to be done online\nor by mail as it requires a form to be signed.
