The events were open to Pare staff, family and friends, and to the public.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1896\" style=\"width: 544px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1896\" class=\"wp-image-1896 \" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"401\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1896\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exploring the Canoe River Wilderness<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The CNC is an annual international competition to see which metropolitan area can photograph and document the most species in one weekend using this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\">iNaturalist app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1895\" style=\"width: 405px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1895\" class=\"wp-image-1895 \" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/screenshot-191x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"620\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot of iNaturalist City Nature Challenge 2018 App<\/p><\/div>\n<p>None of us had used iNaturalist prior to the CNC; however it is safe to say we are hooked. Not only does it let you record your observations, but it also assists in species identification using photo recognition and input from the iNaturalist community! We highly recommend it for nature lovers of all experience levels.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1887\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1887\" class=\"wp-image-1887 \" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"692\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from the iNaturalist app. Check out our observations!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Foxborough Conservation Commission has an excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxboroughma.gov\/search\/default.aspx?q=Guide+to+Conservation+Land+%26+Open+Spaces&#038;type=0,15207780-117,15207780-127|-1,15207864-124\">&#8220;Guide to Conservation Land &amp; Open Spaces&#8221;<\/a> which we used as a resource to plan out our BioBlitz destinations.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday we explored the Canoe River Wilderness, an expanse of diverse conservation land that extends into several neighboring towns. We followed the trail around Greeley\u2019s Pond on East Street, where we explored forested uplands, wetlands, and riverine habitats bordering the pond.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1888\" style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1888\" class=\"wp-image-1888 \" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/1_3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"359\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Capturing some plant observations by the Canoe River<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We veered off the trail to explore a vernal pool. we found spotted salamander egg masses and a newly hatched wood frog tadpole.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1889\" style=\"width: 653px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1889\" class=\"wp-image-1889 \" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"643\" height=\"482\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Discovering vernal pool wildlife in the Canoe River Wilderness<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On Sunday, we visited the site of the Lincoln Hill Camp on Oak Street, a former children\u2019s camp which is now protected as a conservation area. Remnants of the past were found throughout the property, making it a very intriguing site to explore.<\/p>\n\n<p>After exploring the ruins of the camp, we found a trail down through the woods to a certified vernal pool on the property. There was an abundance of species to be found here, from salamander egg masses to fairy shrimp!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1892\" style=\"width: 581px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1892\" class=\"wp-image-1892 \" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/7-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"571\" height=\"428\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spotted Salamander egg mass found in the vernal pool<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next, we wandered down toward the Rumford River, where we found a variety of different environments including a beautiful Atlantic White Cedar swamp.<\/p>\n\n<p>Our team of observers contributed 117 observations to the challenge throughout the weekend. I am proud to say that the Boston area ranked consistently high in the CNC competition! Of the 69 participating regions, we had the 10<sup>th<\/sup> highest number of observations, the 13<sup>th<\/sup> highest number of species, and the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> highest number of people participating in the challenge!
