Dowdell, P.E.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever attended a swanky dinner party and wanted to impress other party-goers with your overall smartness?\u00a0 Well, I can guarantee that you\u2019ll be the life of the party after dropping these recycling-themed knowledge bombs.<\/p>\n<p>A few terms that get thrown around when speaking about recycling are the processes of \u201cupcycling\u201d and \u201cdowncycling\u201d.\u00a0 Both have vastly different meanings \u2013 which I\u2019ll try to explain below.<\/p>\n<p>In general:<\/p>\n<p><b>Upcycling <\/b>refers to the reuse of used\/old materials to fulfill other purposes.<\/p>\n<p><b>Downcycling<\/b> refers to the degradation of materials after recycling process takes place.<\/p>\n<h2>Upcycling<\/h2>\n<p>I liken upcycling to being crafty and resourceful with everyday trash.\u00a0 While most people wouldn\u2019t think twice about throwing these things away, some have made it a goal of theirs to be as thrifty as possible.\u00a0 Upcycling doesn\u2019t require much effort, and if you\u2019re of the crafty persuasion, it might be right up your alley.\u00a0 Here are a few examples to help get the point across:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-865\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/ec0b41dfd926f147b77238fec5d9411c.jpg\" alt=\"ec0b41dfd926f147b77238fec5d9411c\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/survivalinformation?ref=stream\">Source<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>This outdoor stairway was built using tires found during the cleanup of the area.\u00a0 Rather than bringing in new materials for building the stairs, or paying for the disposal of the tires, they were repurposed for this hiking path.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-863\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/63fbe79e51050651b86cda12443f8b2d.jpg\" alt=\"63fbe79e51050651b86cda12443f8b2d\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" \/><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.designsquish.com\/index.php?\/site\/C67\/\">Source<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>This bicycle wheel was on its way to take up space in a landfill when someone decided that it would serve a better purpose holding pots and pans.\u00a0 This one actually seems to be relatively simple to do, and yields some truly useful results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-864\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/ea604417e7b21a249a72003e1db6e079.jpg\" alt=\"ea604417e7b21a249a72003e1db6e079\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h6><a href=\"https:\/\/myhomelookbook.com\/\">Source<\/a><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">The truck that this\u00a0tailgate belonged to was probably wrecked, and the tailgate was one of its last salvageable pieces.\u00a0 It now helps people sit down and relax.\u00a0 Though it looks more like a piece of artwork than anything, it still seems like a good way to show off the business\u2019s dedication to being environmentally conscious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Want more ideas?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/toponlineengineeringdegree.com\/?page_id=116\">How about a hundred<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h2>Downcycling<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike upcycling, downcycling is actually a negative side effect of the recycling process.\u00a0 It refers to the number of times a material can be recycled before there\u2019s no life left to it and it MUST be landfilled.\u00a0 Though it appears that recycling plastics, cardboard, and metals is equally as beneficial to the environment, not all recyclables are created equal.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, certain materials that you throw into that recycle bin are actually not capable of being recycled the way you\u2019d think.\u00a0 Plastics, for example, cannot be melted down and reused for the same purposes as their original products, unlike glass or aluminum.\u00a0 Therefore, these plastics must be ground up and used for fleece clothing or door mats (not for something that you\u2019d eat out of).<\/p>\n<p>The term downcycling refers to the degree of degradation that occurs to the material after being recycled.\u00a0 Below, I\u2019ve listed the materials that yield the best bang for your buck in terms of recycling (the lowest rate of downcycling is listed first, the highest rate listed last).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>1. Aluminum, Steel, and Glass<\/b> \u2013 All those wine bottles, soda cans and steel girders break down very slowly or not at all during the recycling process.\u00a0 Take every step you can to recycle these materials, since they can be put back to use for the same purposes down the line!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/recycled-glass-tile-materials.jpg\" alt=\"recycled-glass-tile-materials\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dornob.com\/recycled-glass-tile-countertop-surface-material\/#axzz2nAfsQ5Sb\">Source<\/a><\/h6>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>2. Paper and Cardboard<\/b> \u2013 This material has around six to twelve downcycles before it must be landfilled.\u00a0 Because the fibers shorten every time it\u2019s put through the recycling process, the life span of paper degrades rather quickly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/handmadeboxpaper.jpg\" alt=\"handmadeboxpaper\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/the-paper-studio.blogspot.com\/2009_08_01_archive.html\">Source<\/a><\/h6>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>3. Plastics <\/b>\u2013 The best products that plastics can be directly recycled into are fleece material, carpet, railroad ties, and new products cast specifically as recycled plastic (such as Adirondack chairs).\u00a0 This means that at most, they have around one to two downcycles before needing to be landfilled.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-869\" style=\"line-height: 1.5;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parecorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/master-pw003.jpg\" alt=\"master-PW003\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hayneedle.com\/product\/mostdurablerecycledcurvedbackadirondackchair.cfm?source=pla&amp;kwid=AdirondackChairsandOttomans_PW003&amp;tid=PW003-HG&amp;adtype=pla&amp;kw=&amp;ci_src=17588969&amp;ci_sku=PW003-HG&amp;gclid=COaOyaigqLsCFU3hQgodzCgA5w\">Source\u00a0<\/a><\/h6>\n<p>Only a very small percentage of #1 plastic can be recycled and utilized as plastic for bottles and other food-grade plastics.\u00a0 In addition, it takes significantly more resources to recycle plastic than glass or metals.\u00a0 It appears that the higher the number on the inside of the recycling symbol (normally #1-7) the more difficult it is to recycle.\u00a0 In light of this, Rhode Island currently accepts all plastics for recycling, regardless of their numerical designations.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on recyclable materials and their downcycle rates, check out this chart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Mark L.
